Hosting an Exchange Student from France

July 10th marked the arrival of our exchange student from France, Adrien!  He's 18 years old and from Paris!  (That might've made me a little nervous - this is Green Bay - outside of our beloved Packers - there's not a whole lot going on here.)  But, I think we managed to have some fun...

From bowling to Six Flags, here's a brief run-down via pictures of his time with us:

Yeah - so I don't think he was all that interested in our Packers so I didn't take him on a tour - but you better believe I got my photo.  I told him one day he might realize how big the Packers are and be able to look back and say, 'Yeah, I was there!'
The first few days all the boys had fun playing cards - even Joshua.  Nothing like hearing your 10 year old placing bets!  But, at least they all played together (with my 4th child, Mitchell!).

We went to eat at Red Robin one night and didn't feel like going home so we took a walk around Dick's Sporting Goods - where there was a big bin of cheeseheads the boys so kindly put on and let me take their picture!

These boys, too.....

The first day of Polka Days was a soggy bust - it poured!  I don't think he enjoyed it too much.  But, the parade was much more enjoyable - and dry.

Devon joined us and  he and Joshua did a great job collecting candy!  Afterwards we all went geocaching and Tyler finally found it!  It was very well hidden and I feared we might leave empty-handed.  I love the pic.....

We went and saw Spy that evening.  Then we returned Devon to his home.  We had an enjoyable time at the Ramski's....  but I won't go into detail (we'll just consider it an 'inside thing').

John made Adrien drink tea out of a boot!  The grown-ups got to enjoy wine Kimber ordered off QVC - who knew!!!  (I might need to watch a little more QVC!!)

Sometime or another we got to eat at a little hole-in-the-wall, with some of the best food I've had (what are hole-in-the-walls known for??).  It's White Dog, Black Cat café.  We learned a little more about our friend here that had our eyes as big as saucers.  So, I had to take his picture and share with my closest friends via Snapchat, of course.  He didn't really care for this pic and made me take another - but I love his smile!

A few days later we hit up Hagermeister Park for lunch and headed to the NEW Zoo with Tammy, Maddie, Gena, Matthew and Mitchell (my 4th son).  I love group pictures.....

That same day the boys got to enjoy the Adventure Park at the zoo.  Zip lining, ropes course, rock wall climbing....  I think they had fun!

Mitchell leaned out of the pic - I'll have to point my finger at him when I see him next.  Adrien has skills, that's for sure.  He could've run that course twice in the amount of time it took everyone else - and only Mitchell and Justin finished it (and Adrien, obviously).  Of course, neither Justin or Mitchell made it to the top of the rock and rope walls.

The next day we went to Bay Beach night with all the host families.  It was really neat seeing all the French kids so talkative and with big smiles.  My kids kept getting onto me for asking question after question - well, how else do you get to know someone - and encourage them to practice their English???

That following Sunday the three older boys went to Commando and played some paintball.... (Joshua wasn't very happy that he didn't get to go)

Monday Sky took all the boys to Six Flags!!  Here is such an awesome pic.... I love it!
Sky's and Joshua's face crack me up!  And, I love seeing Adrien look like he's having a great time.  That is one thing I constantly worried about.  Mrs. Nickels (Tyler's French teacher and VIE coordinator) had to remind me that the French aren't as expression-full (yes, I just made that word up) as we American's are.  Which, makes it hard sometimes to judge if one is enjoying himself.

Later that week we went to Nakashima's with the Ramski's - I think Adrien was rather entertained.  The chef allowed us each to catch shrimp with our wide-open mouths (I failed).

Afterwards, Kimber took our picture together (sans Sky since he was working).  It's my favorite picture....

I loved listening and sharing music and watching TV together.  Other things we did were swim, of course, made a French dish, and some mall-shopping.

He brought us all gifts, too!  Each kid got a cool Paris T-shirt and me and Sky (well, me - I didn't really share) got some really yummy chewy biscuits (they were actually REALLY good) and some champagne!  I had worked to make him a scrapbook of his time here.  (I think it turned out really cute.)

I know he was only with us for three weeks but I was here that whole time and I got to spend a lot of time with him.  Frankly, I miss him.  I would've like to had him stay longer.  It takes me longer than a week or two to get fully acclimated.  So, by the time he was leaving I was beginning to feel most comfortable with him here.  I'm hoping we're able to keep in touch.  He's a good kid and I hope to see him do well in the future.

With that said, I'd totally host again.  It's a fun experience but, there are a few things I'd plan better.  Some of the other moms took their kids to a Brewer's game - I think Adrien would've liked that.  I also would've made a schedule and planned cooking more (I was really short of the mark when it came to feeding the kid, I think).

Of course, I have a much more comprehensive dialogue of his stay - 17 pages, in fact (you know I like to input many conjectures and muse a bit).  Plus, this is a photo-blog, so less wordage and more pictures! :)
