Thoughts on Home Designs
I was just over at Pinterest and someone was posting house designs. So, I opened a few to have a peek at what someone else considers their dream home. Right off the bat, they are not plans I'd ever opt for. Frankly, what I like, I haven't seen in print. I have seen what I like - in an old home a friend used to own.
I'm not a party girl. I'm very 'contained.' What I mean is, when it comes to a home I don't want any Tom, Dick or Harry to walk in my front door and have a clear view up my stairs nor do I want them to have to walk to the back of the house to get to where the 'entertainment' is. Sadly, I do not live in my dream home. My biggest pet peeve about my house is that my stairs lead straight out the front door. Ok, not quite. It's slightly off-center, but you know what I mean, I'm sure.
There are two things from old homes, here in WI, that I want in my dream home (and yes, I can see my dream home, plain as day, in my mind). First, many older homes, especially those set up in parishes (blocks), have a 'box' on the front of the house. I don't know what to call it or how to describe it other than a closed in front porch. So, there's a door to it that one wonders, 'do I knock here, or do I just go on in and knock at the inner door?' Some people use them for living spaces in which if you don't knock before entering - you're walking right into their living space. But, that's not what they are meant for. I'd set mine up so that there was lighting, seating, coat rack - to make 'guest's' (welcome or not - Jehovah's Witnesses and other religious bull-pushers) comfortable. Once they knock on the house door I can be free to walk into that outer room and be polite in telling them to 'get lost' or I can sit down and really consider my Girl Scout cookie options or which tantalizing Boy Scout popcorn tin I want to purchase - without anyone coming into my home. That's the best part - no one that I don't know (or know but am not prepared to entertain) has to come into my home, see my mess, or see my nice things. I don't have to stand blocking an open door from cats or dogs getting out, I don't have let the heat out (or cold in - during winter) or the heat in (during summer). It's such a nice addition to a home I don't know why we all don't have one, or use the ones we have in that manner. Also, I can't tell you how many drivers would stop by my house in Wrightstown to ask for directions or to use a phone because they ran off the road and into the ditch (happened more than you can guess!) So, that's one thing I want on my dream home. I care less about how it looks from the road. I get my kicks knowing that my house might not look quite so attractive on the outside and knowing that when people step inside, they're in awe! (Just for clarity - I do not live in my dream home! Wish that I did! I feel I must keep pointing this out.)
The second thing my dream home would have - is its kitchen at the front of the house! My friend used to live in a home that you'd walk in and her U-shaped kitchen was to your left and in the counter that ran vertical to the door was the sink. I love that! Most folks, when they come over - where do they head? The kitchen. I don't want you walking past my formal living room or formal dining room or my home office or any other part of my house to get to where all the excitement it. My house is for living in but for the times I choose to have you over - I don't want you to see all those things that are personal to me. It's not that I covet them but it's more like I just don't want you eye-balling everything I have whether or not you intend to compliment me on my lovely home or furniture and décor. It's just - not anyone else's business what I have in my home or how I decorate or how I use my spaces. It's my safe place, my one and only haven. So, I'd like guests to enter into my kitchen/keeping room area that runs from left to right, and in MY dream home, an open fire place dead ahead so as not to block my entire house off but to offer a warm and inviting 'wall' between community space and private space.
So, that's it. The two main things I want in my dream home that I have not seen in any existing home plans (oh, but best believe I have my own plans - wish that I could afford to take them to a company to have them professionally done!).

Tyler's Golden Birthday
My little golden display... (Bought and ready for the sole purpose of a photo op that I hope to make a tradition)
Photo session.... (This is so not Tyler's cup of tea but I demand it.)
As evidenced by ....
"If you don't stop taking pictures I'm going to hit you with this."
Kids. Don't you just love them!?
His first pick for his birthday dinner: Golden Corral. Granted it fits the theme but I wasn't having it. His second choice: Buffalo Wild Wings. I can take it or leave it but I don't think Sky was having it. Final choice: Red Lobster. That works.
Happy birthday to my middle child on his fourteenth birthday, June 14, 2014!
